Labor Day: A Safe Goodbye to Summer

As Labor Day draws near, summer is coming to a close. Fortunately, there’s time for at least one more pool party! Throughout the weekend, millions of Americans will be splish-splashing with their family and friends.

At Life Saver Pool Fence, we couldn’t be happier. Celebrations are what summer is all about. However, our number one concern is always water safety. After all, no one wants to be lulled into a false sense of security. Always remember, even though it’s a holiday weekend… drowning is always possible. It is the leading cause of death for children aged zero-through-four. Furthermore, two-thirds of drownings occur during planned activities, such as pool parties.

To help prevent any possible tragedies, let’s go over some basic safety tips to help you and your family stay safe this Labor Day!

Be Prepared this Labor Day

First things first, you should only swim in properly designated areas. That goes double for children. Typically, these areas will include a swimming pool or a beach with a lifeguard. If there is a deep area of your pool, clearly mark it with rope and floating buoys. That will send a clear signal of danger to weaker swimmers.

Use Active Supervision

At the very least, children should never go near the water without an attentive adult. That’s where active supervision comes in. As you can probably guess, active supervision is much more than merely having an adult present. The adult must pay close attention at all times to any kids in the water. This should be treated as a sacred duty. The designated watcher should remain free of distraction. This means no goofing off on your phone or drinking. Ideally, the supervisor should stay within arm’s reach of the children at all times. This is absolutely necessary for kids under the age of six.

Bring the Right Gear

Before anyone jumps into the water this Labor Day, make sure you’re fully prepared. That means safety gear! Always keep a life preserver and a first aid kit within reach. For younger children, make sure they’re wearing a proper life jacket. “Proper” refers to jackers that are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Don’t rely on swimmies or floaties. We’ve written about this in much greater detail before. You can read all about the unreliability of floaties in this blog entry.

Don’t Underestimate the Value of a Pool Fence

Obviously, at Life Saver Pool Fence we’re pretty big fans of mesh pool fencing. These safety barriers are a powerful way to fortify your swimming area. They’re sturdy enough to withstand the elements and curious hands, and tall enough to prevent kids from climbing over. They’re also ideal for keeping your pets out of harm’s way!

Learn to Swim

Finally, this should go without saying, but swimming lessons are crucial for Labor Day pool parties! That goes for adults as well as kids. You’re never too old to learn how to control your body in the water. As an exercise, swimming also has lots of health benefits, so what are you waiting for?

Get out there and have a safe and secure Labor Day!
